Advanced Cardiac Imaging
About
Advanced Cardiac Imaging is the subspecialty of cardiology concerned with the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease using advanced imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance.
Cardiac MRI
Cardiac MRI can provide detailed information on the type and severity of heart disease to help your doctor decide the best way to treat heart problems such as coronary heart disease, heart valve problems, pericarditis, cardiac tumours, or damage from a heart attack. Cardiac MRI can help explain results from other imaging tests such as chest x rays and chest CT scans. Before your procedure, a contrast dye to highlight your heart and blood vessels, may be injected into a vein in your arm.
Cardiac CT
Cardiac CT can be used to monitor the results of coronary artery bypass grafting or to follow up on abnormal findings from earlier chest x- rays.
The scan usually takes about 15 minutes to complete, but can take more than an hour including preparation time and, if needed, the time to take medicines such as beta blockers to slow your heart rate. Before the test, a contrast dye, often iodine, may be injected into a vein in your arm. This contrast dye highlights your blood vessels and creates clearer pictures. You may feel some discomfort from the needle or, after the contrast dye is injected, you may feel warm briefly or have a temporary metallic taste in your mouth. Talk to your doctor if you are uncomfortable in tight or closed spaces to see if you need medicine to relax you during the test. During the scan, the technician will monitor your heart rate with an electrocardiogram (EKG). You will hear soft buzzing, clicking, or whirring sounds when you are inside the scanner and the scanner is taking pictures. You will be able to hear from and talk to the technician performing the test while you are inside the scanner. The technician may ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds during the test.

Interventional Cardiology
About
Interventional Cardiology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment abnormalities in the arteries and chambers of the heart by resorting to a procedure called cardiac catheterization.
- The specificity of cardiac catheterization is that, instead of resorting to “open” surgery, the interventional cardiologist inserts a long thin tube called a catheter into an artery or vein through a small incision.
- Cardiac Catheterization is much less invasive than open surgery, which has four main benefits:
- The procedure is generally performed under local anaesthesia
- The recovery time is cut down from weeks to a few days at most
- The risk of complications is reduced dramatically
- Scarring is minimal or even absent
Euracare’s medical director, Dr Tosin Majekodunmi is a specialist in both adult and paediatric congenital & structural heart disease. Dr Tosin Majekodunmi has extensive experience in performing the cardiac catheterization procedures required to address these conditions in both adult and paediatric patients
Euracare provides management and services for many types of cardiological conditions, including but not limited to those listed below.

At Euracare, Dr Majekodunmi is providing pioneering procedures previously only available for patients able to travel overseas. In Nigeria, cardiovascular diseases are fast becoming a leading course of death hence the need for cardiac interventions that could relieve the symptoms or prevent devastating results such as heart attack or stroke is growing exponentially.

Interventional Radiology
About
Interventional Radiology, also known as vascular and interventional radiology or surgical radiology, is an independent medical specialty that employs minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. Because of the minimally invasive nature of Interventional Radiology, most procedures do not require general anaesthesia, thereby decreasing the added risk of being put to sleep under anaesthesia. Interventional Radiology treatments do not involve “open surgery”, which has many benefits, such as:
- Small incisions, few incisions, or no incision
- Less pain
- Low risk of infection
- Short hospital stays
- Quick recovery time
- Less scarring
- Reduced blood loss
- Reduced apprehension

Dr Hammed Ninalowo explains how Interventional Radiology procedures can save diabetic limbs.
Dr Hammed Ninalowo, a US-trained Vascular and Interventional Radiologist practicing at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital Nigeria explains how Interventional Radiology can save patients from the amputation of limbs. Diabetic foot disease, mainly due to neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, and/or infection, often leads to ulceration and possible subsequent limb amputation.Euracare provides free scans to Siamese twins conjoined at the head
First time in Ghana, Euracare Advanced Diagnostics and Heart Centre provides free Cerebral Angiogram for Conjoined twins (Craniopagus).
As part of preparing for a life-saving separation surgery for the twin babies, Euracare Advanced Diagnostics and Heart Centre carried out an angiogram on June 4th, which will be the first out of several scans the twins will be subjected to in the next 12 to 18 months for the separation.
It took 6 hours for a team of 13 medical staff including four anesthesiologists to transport the babies and administer the scans.
Craniopagus are exceedingly rare, with an incident of one in 2,5 million birth, making it difficult for surgeons to master all techniques around such cases. Euracare assembled its best team to undertake this complex procedure as a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
The success of this operation will make history as this is the first attempt to separate conjoined babies at the head in the country.
Euracare’s team is extremely proud of being part of this pioneering medical procedure in Ghana.

Antenatal & Postnatal Care
About
Our goal is to provide regular check-ups that allow doctors to treat and prevent potential health problems throughout the course of the pregnancy and to promote healthy lifestyles that benefit both mother and child. During check-ups, pregnant women receive medical information over maternal physiological changes in pregnancy, biological changes, and prenatal nutrition including prenatal vitamins. Recommendations on management and healthy lifestyle changes are also made during regular check-ups. Prenatal screening is playing important roll to reduce the frequency of maternal death, miscarriages, birth defects, low birth weight, neonatal infections and other preventable health problems.
Euracare’s specialists provide comprehensive range of Antenatal and Postnatal Care services.

Bariatric & Weight Loss Surgery
About
You may be considering weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, if you have been unable to maintain weight loss through diet, exercise, and/or medication. Weight loss surgery is a safe, proven option for people on their weight loss journey. Weight loss surgery is not a quick-fix or an easy way out. But when it’s accompanied by permanent lifestyle changes, it can help you achieve lasting benefits in your physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Prevalence of Obesity
- 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2016, and 13% were obese
- Most of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight
- 29% of adults in Nigeria are overweight
- The world prevalence of diabetes among adults (aged 20 – 79 years) was 6.4% in 2010 (affecting 285 million adults). Most of the people with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries such as Nigeria. It is predicted that this will rise to 7.7% by 2030 (439 million adults). Of concern is that 69% of the increase in the number of adults with type 2 diabetes will be from the low- and middle-income countries with the remaining 20% increase coming from the high-income countries
- Type 2 diabetes is largely prevalent among people with obesity (80-85%) while the most successful way to control it, is to achieve and maintain healthy body weight

Conditions and Procedures
Gastric Balloon Procedure
The gastric balloon is a soft, silicon balloon that is inserted into the stomach by endoscopy and filled with sterile saline. The balloon is designed to partially fill your stomach, giving you a feeling of fullness. It will not only make you feel less hungry but feel fuller more quickly after small meals. The balloon is removed after 6 months to one year.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
The gastric sleeve procedure is normally done as keyhole surgery and involves a vertical removal of up to 75% of the stomach area. This means that the stomach continues to function as normal, but is simply smaller, which reduces the appetite and makes it easier to cut down dramatically on calorie intake. In addition, the portion of the stomach that is removed is the area responsible for secreting the hormone “Ghrelin”, which is responsible for appetite and hunger – the near elimination of this “hunger hormone” results in a significant reduction or loss of appetite. Patients can expect 50-70% excess weight loss in the first year and this is increased if they also follow sensible dietary advice from our dietitians (i.e. low fat, low sugar, low alcohol, high fruit/veg…). The sleeve is a tool to help the patient manage their food intake and appetite.Single Anastomosis Bypass
Single anastomosis gastric bypass or mini-gastric bypass, is an effective procedure that can be used as a primary weight loss procedure. This procedure was developed to reduce operating time, simplify the procedure and reduce complications. It can also be used in patients who have had previous gastric banding or sleeve surgery but have been unsuccessful with weight loss. The upper part of the stomach is divided into a tube, and then joined to a loop of intestine. The procedure reduces absorption of food by bypassing up to 6 feet (200cm) of intestines. At age 21 I weighed 94kg. Today, after surgery I am 68kg.
